What is your take on the recent ban of energy drinks on the grounds of Hillsborough Middle school? Do you use them, do you allow your kids to drink them? Is the school crossing the line on a parenting issue? We are not the only school, several other shools in NJ and across the US have taken steps to curb childrens use & abuse of these drinks after some kids were hospitalized after consuming them. Their position being it's an adult does of a stimulant that is harmful to kids because it raises blood pressure and causes palpatations. Also though I have not seen the commercials myself, some brand is under fire for promoting the drink by making some type of reference to cocaine and alcohol use. Assemblyman Ralph Caputo is actually proposing a legislation involved in banning the sale of brands that advertise themselves in this manner. (unsigned 06/18/08 2:17pm)
I don\'t think they are a good idea for adults to drink let alone children. I wouldn\'t give my middle schooler a cup of coffee going out the door in the morning. Caffeine can be addictive and it\'s going to put their bodies on an earlier path to seeking outside sources to make them \"feel\" a certain way in my opinion. Everyone today seems to always be looking for that \"magic pill\" to feel happy, have more energy etc. and as far as the school banning them I am sure there are some parents out there who may think their child is eating something in the morning when in fact their child may be stopping at Wawa for an energy drink instead of eating. I would want someone to make me aware at the very least. I may be dating myself but when I went to school, the school was involved in issues of health and hygiene. I remember there was no smoking allowed on school grounds and boys had to have a note from thier parents if they wanted to stop shaving and grow facial hair. I don\'t think the school is crossing the line, I think it\'s just a new problem in a new age and they have to address it somehow. (SPONSOR 06/20/08 5:40pm) REPLY
